Summary
A multifamily high-rise in Charlotte, NC wanted residents to experience unit entry, elevator access, and amenities as one seamless, phone-first flow. Behind that single experience sat three separate systems: base-building access control, the elevator provider's dispatch platform, and the resident app itself, which had to badge across readers it did not natively support.
The Challenge
Unit entry, elevator access, and amenities had to feel like one app, but behind them sat base-building access control, the elevator provider, and the resident app — and the app had to badge across readers it did not natively support.
What We Did
- Mapped the resident flow end to end against the technology path underneath it: lobby entry, elevator dispatch, and the resident's own unit.
- Weighed three integration options (swap the readers, run two apps, or bridge credential databases) against cost, time-to-launch, and resident experience.
- Recommended a two-app path: partitioned cleanly by system, fully documented, with a defined route to consolidate into a single app later.
- When mobile badging failed in testing, took the integration apart to the reader firmware and credential format to isolate the root cause.
The Outcome
The fault turned out to be a software detail in the access integration, not the hardware. It was reconfigured and retested on iOS and Android, with no reader replacement required, and residents now badge lobby-to-door on a single credential across all three underlying systems.
