Most visitor management platforms rely heavily on email. That works well for a planned meeting. The host registers a guest ahead of time, the guest receives an invitation, and they have plenty of time to find it before arriving.

Buildings deal with a lot of visitors who don't fit that scenario. A contractor shows up to work on an HVAC unit. A vendor arrives for a delivery. Someone gets added to an event that morning. A guest gets to the lobby and can't find the original invitation.
